Start with the state record. Every Florida LLC has a page on Sunbiz, and most of them name the people who run it. On one recent day of new filings we checked, 93% listed at least one manager, member, or officer.
Step 1: Open the Sunbiz detail page
Search the LLC by name and open the result. The detail page shows:
- Filing information: document number, date filed, status, and FEI/EIN if provided.
- Principal and mailing addresses.
- Registered agent name and address.
- Authorized person(s) or officers, with a title code and address.
- Annual reports and filed documents, including the original articles of organization as a PDF.
The PDF of the articles is worth opening. It sometimes shows a signer, a correspondence email, or a second manager that is easier to read than the summary page.
Step 2: Decode the title codes
These are the codes you will see most on new Florida filings, from most to least common on the day we sampled:
| Code | Meaning | Usually the owner? |
|---|---|---|
| MGR | Manager | Often. In a manager-managed LLC, the person running it. |
| AMBR | Authorized member | Yes, in most small LLCs. |
| P / PRES | President | Usually, on corporations. |
| CEO | Chief executive officer | Usually. |
| MBR | Member | Yes, an owner. |
| AR | Authorized representative | Sometimes. Can be an owner or someone filing for them. |
| AP | Authorized person | Sometimes. Can be the owner or an attorney or filer. |
Florida does not require an LLC to list every owner. A person on the filing is someone with authority, not proof of who owns what share.
Step 3: Rule out the registered agent
If the registered agent is a company, it is almost always a filing service. On the new filings we checked, about 29% named a company as registered agent. Skip those contacts entirely and go back to the managers and members.
When the registered agent is a person with the same name as a manager, that is a good sign you have the owner.
Step 4: Find a phone number
The filing will not give you one. Work through these sources in order, from most to least reliable:
- Business website. Search the exact business name. Brand-new businesses often do not have one yet.
- Google Business Profile. Search the name plus the city. The listing phone usually reaches the owner in a small business.
- License lookups. Contractors, cosmetologists, real estate, and many other trades are licensed through DBPR. The license record ties a person to the business and sometimes to an address.
- LinkedIn and social profiles. Useful for confirming you have the right person, less often for a number.
- People-search databases. Search the manager's name with the filing address or city. Match on address, not just name, because common names produce the wrong person.
Check that the number belongs to the person on the filing before you call. A match on name and address is much safer than a match on name alone.
Step 5: Keep a record
Write down where each number came from. If a number is wrong or someone asks not to be contacted, you need to find and fix every copy. Before calling mobile numbers, read our summary of the calling rules in Florida.
When it is worth outsourcing
Done by hand, this is several minutes per business, and many searches come up empty. If you need owner numbers for new businesses every day, FiledToday does this research for each weekday's filings in your county and only delivers leads where a phone number was found. Common questions
How do I find out who owns an LLC in Florida?
Search the business on Sunbiz and open its detail page. Look at the Authorized Person(s) or Officer/Director section. People listed as MGR (manager), AMBR (authorized member), or MBR (member) are usually the owners or the people running the company. Florida does not require every owner to be listed.
What does AMBR mean on Sunbiz?
AMBR stands for authorized member: a member of the LLC who is authorized to act for it. MGR means manager, AP means authorized person, and MBR means member.
Does Sunbiz show the owner's phone number?
No. Sunbiz filings do not include phone numbers or email addresses. You have to find contact details from other sources such as the business website, a Google Business Profile, license lookups, or people-search databases.
Is the registered agent the owner?
Sometimes. On small LLCs the owner often names themselves. But on the new filings we checked, about 29% listed a company as registered agent, usually a filing service. Those agents only receive legal papers and will not pass along a sales call.
