What Florida requires
Every registered vehicle needs personal injury protection and property damage liability. Heavier commercial vehicles have higher minimums under section 627.7415:
| Gross vehicle weight | Minimum combined liability per occurrence |
|---|---|
| 26,000 to 35,000 lbs | $50,000 |
| 35,000 to 44,000 lbs | $100,000 |
| 44,000 lbs and up | $300,000 |
Interstate motor carriers also face federal minimums, and freight brokers and shippers usually require more. A new carrier needs a policy before it can take its first load.
Which new filings to call first
- Trucking, hauling, and freight LLCs. Names with Transport, Logistics, Freight, Hauling, or Trucking.
- Towing and auto transport. Specialized coverage and short decision windows.
- Delivery and courier businesses. Often one owner-operator buying a first commercial policy.
- Contractors and cleaning companies with vans. A personal auto policy usually won't cover business use.
A first call that works
"Hi, is this [name]? This is [your name] with [agency]. I saw [business name] just registered, congratulations on the new company. Are you running your own truck, or leasing on with someone? I help new carriers get the commercial auto and cargo coverage brokers ask for."
Open with the requirement they are about to hit, not with "I sell insurance." More openers, voicemails, and follow-up emails are in the calling guide. Before you dial, check the TCPA basics.
