Workers' comp leads: new Florida businesses that will need coverage

A new contractor needs workers' comp, or an exemption, the day they put a helper on a job. A new restaurant needs it before its fourth hire. New filings tell you who is about to hit that line.

Counted from contractors, cleaning companies, restaurants, trucking and delivery, and medical practices whose names say what they do. Many new businesses have names like "Blue Palm Group LLC" that don't, so the real number is higher.

When Florida requires workers' comp

According to the Division of Workers' Compensation, the threshold depends on the industry. Check a specific business with the free workers' comp requirement checker.

IndustryCoverage required at
Construction1 or more employees, counting corporate officers and LLC members
Non-construction4 or more employees, counting corporate officers and LLC members
Agriculture6 regular employees or 12 seasonal workers

Officers and LLC members can apply for an exemption for themselves. For a new construction LLC, that is the first conversation: take the exemption now, and get a policy in place before the first employee or the first general contractor who asks for a certificate.

Which new filings to call first

  1. New construction and trade LLCs. One employee triggers coverage, and GCs ask for a certificate or exemption before the first job.
  2. Cleaning and janitorial companies. They hire crews early, and commercial clients ask for proof of coverage.
  3. Restaurants and food businesses. Staff counts pass four quickly once they open.
  4. Trucking and delivery. Drivers who are employees, not 1099 contractors, count toward the threshold.

A first call that works

"Hi, is this [name]? This is [your name] with [agency]. I saw [business name] just registered with the state, congratulations. A lot of new contractors I talk to aren't sure whether to file the workers' comp exemption or get a policy before they hire. Have you sorted that out yet?"

Open with the requirement they are about to hit, not with "I sell insurance." More openers, voicemails, and follow-up emails are in the calling guide. Before you dial, check the TCPA basics.

Questions

How do I find businesses that need workers' comp in Florida?

Start with newly registered businesses in industries that hire early: construction and trades, cleaning, restaurants, trucking, and medical. Florida publishes every new filing daily. FiledToday filters them to your county and adds the owner's phone number.

Does a one-person construction LLC need workers' comp in Florida?

Construction businesses need coverage with one or more employees, and corporate officers and LLC members count. A sole member can usually apply for an exemption instead, but needs coverage once they hire. Check the Division of Workers' Compensation for current rules.

Are new businesses good workers' comp prospects?

Yes, when they are in industries that hire early. Most new businesses have not chosen an agent yet, and a contractor or restaurant often needs a policy or exemption within weeks of filing.
